Chocking up
Vølund Junior.

In the beginning of the winter the vintage people chock up their vehicles. The winter is then spent by maintaining the vehicles making them ready for the next season. The Steamroller Club does the same and when Vølund Junior should have the major boiler repair, we had to do it in the right manner.

We had to exchange the boiler tubes after twenty years in service and it was necessary to lift the boiler making it possible to enter the firebox from the bottom.

It is not an easy job to lift a eight ton steamroller. We had to think carefully. Of course it was an easy solution to hire a BIG crane, but it would have been very expensive and difficult to find room for such a crane in the barn (especially in the height).

Peter Hansen had a better idea and said:

"We need following items:
1. Some strong timber
2. One chain saw
3. One Land Rover Series III med with a winch
4. One yellow crane
5. Various bolts"
The most Peter already had. The Land Rover he borrowed from his wife Annette and the rest we found from the storage of the Steamroller Club (including the yellow crane). Using the chain saw two wedges were cut from a 8x8" timber piece.
The wedges were put in front of the rear roller of the Vølund, the Land Rover was tied to Vølund Senior and the wire was fixed to the front of Vølund Junior. The very slowly Vølund Junior moved up the wedges and onto a pair of 8x8”. Behind the roller a solid construction was made, the wedges and the Land Rover were moved behind Vølund Junior and the process was repeated. Finally the rear roller was raised 16" above the floor.

A couple of solid chocks were bolted in front and behind the roller preventing any movement. Now the reason for the yellow crane. The steering gear was dismounted and the crane could lift the frame while the front roller stayed on the floor.
